Best Smartwatch for Texting - Reviews

Here’s a super affordable smart watch from Topffy.  And it’s really popular with customers.

What we love about this one is it’s two ways of working, namely via Bluetooth or via SIM card.

Basically, you can install a SIM card into it and you can use it as you would a real phone, answering and dial-up, and send and reply to messages.  And, best of all you can do this anywhere you go, without having to be within Bluetooth range of your phone. All you’d need is a decent network signal.

Another way it works is via Bluetooth.  This method will allow you to send MMS messages, that is multimedia messages that might include pictures, audio, and/or video.

This Bluetooth method will also enable you to send messages via apps such as Whatsapp, Twitter, and Facebook.

It’s compatible with a range of phones, several iPhones, several Android phones, including many Samsung ones, Google Pixel, Huawei and many more.  This is handy should there come a time when you decide to change your phone.

It has all the standard functions you’d expect to get from a modern smart watch.  And in addition to all the health and fitness monitoring, there’s also a camera function for all your selfies, and a music player.

The watch is all black and features a round clock face which is nice and big, coming in at 1.54 inches, which is amongst the largest you tend to get on smart watches.  And it’s a high definition display, 240 by 240 pixels, so you can see your apps and read messages clearly.

Despite it’s cheap price, it’s actually very durable and ergonomic, with a stainless steel surface and an anti-sweat finish.  It’s also waterproof and will continue to work if you’re out in the rain.

We love it’s two-way anti-lost function, where you can use your watch to find your phone or vice versa.

Fitbit is a big name in smart watches, and all though they are watches better known for tracking your exercise, they can also be used for receiving text notifications and sending text messages by voice.

This is one of Fitbits bestsellers, with over 18,000 customers from Amazon alone.  And the customers rave about it - and for good reason too.

There’s a lot to love about this smart watch.  It comes with Amazon Alexa already built in for one.  This means you can use just your voice to catch up on news, or to check the weather, set timers, or control compatible devices.

We also love how you can use it to access your Spotify account, or Pandora or Deezer, giving you music wherever you go.

It also has a fantastic battery life, going up to a staggering 6 full days depending on usage.

As you might expect from Fitbit, the watch can track your heart rate and sleep quality, distance travelled and calories burned.

The standout feature of this smart watch from Letsfit is hands down it’s affordability.

And although Letsfit are not as well known as some of your other brands, they are one of Amazon’s best selling smart watch manufacturers.  And the customers rate this watch really well.

One of it’s more unique features is its IP68 waterproof rating, which means that you can keep it on in the shower, or even wear it swimming or for other watersports.

We also love how it’s battery just keeps on going.  It will last up to 10 days after a full charge.

You can send messages via social media (including Facebook, WhatsApp, twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram) over WiFi, or send text messages via SMS provided you have a compatible smartphone.  The watch is compatible with several phones and operating systems, including Android, iOS, and Windows.

Check out this smart watch from Fswatch.  Even we were surprised to see such an affordable smart watch with such a good customer rating.

Like most smart watches you can hook it up to your smartphone via Bluetooth, but this beauty adds additional functionality.  With it’s SIM card slot, you can dial up and send texts without having to be within a stone’s throw of your smartphone, so long as you have a decent network signal.

When you are hooked up to your smartphone, you can use those famous apps we’ve all come to know and love like Facebook and Twitter.

The watch also does things like acting as sports assistant, sleep monitor, and reminds you when you’ve been sedentary too long.  It also has a camera and you can use it to play music.

We like it’s intelligent anti-theft mechanism, and on the flip side how you can use the watch to locate your smartphone, if you’ve forgotten where you left it in the house.

It has a smart all black design, and a large high definition touch screen display.

Apple is a truly iconic brand, and their products are generally immediate hits, and this smart watch is no exception.

Of course, being an Apple watch, means it’s only compatible with iOS devices like iPhones, iPads, Macs, etcetera.

With this watch you can answer calls, send texts, track various forms of exercise, including swimming since it’s waterproof, store or stream your favorite music, ask questions to Siri, make payments, and use GPS tracking.

One thing we particularly like about it is how you can ping your phone to help find it.

For even more ideas on what you can do with the watch you can head over to the App Store, which has something for everybody.

You can get the watch in different screen sizes.  We like the 42mm display, simply because it’s bigger, but if you wanted something more dainty, you could opt for a 38mm display.

When the watch arrives there are two straps provided, simply pick the one which fits best.  And if you ever wanted a change from the black, you can purchase a different colored band.

Best Smartwatch for Texting - Buyers Guide

Smart watches are great, but they’re not all created equal.  Here are some things you might like to mull over to decide which smartwatch is the right one for you.

Brand honestly isn’t everything when it comes to smart watches, though it can make for a good status symbol, since iOS devices tend to cost a lot more than some of Google’s Android Wear, or even Windows based counterparts.  And that leads us nicely onto our next section.

Which operating system

There’s actually a lot more operating systems for smart watches than you might think, and they all rank pretty much the same in terms of easy to use user interface.  So when it comes to choosing the operating system, our best advice is to get one that will be compatible with the devices you already have, be they smartphone, tablet or whatever.

Texting methods and Connectivity

There are 2 main ways to text from a smartwatch, and these are SMS and MMS.

SMS stands for Short Message Service and is the most widely used type of text messaging.  It allows you to send up to 160 characters (that’s letters, numbers and symbols) per text.  To send a text message via SMS, you need cellular service in your smart watch.

MMS meanwhile, stands for Multimedia Messaging Service.  Unlike an SMS, an MMS will allow you to send a message which includes pictures, video or audio content to the recipient.  However, sending text messages via MMS requires a WiFi signal, which you might not be lucky enough to get when you're outdoors.

So that is why, when it comes to texting, many smart watch wearers opt for a stand-alone smartwatch phone with a SIM card and cellular connectivity, such as 4G.  These enable you to text on your watch without having to carry your phone along with you in addition to your watch.

However, the drawback of watches that rely on SIM cards is that you’ll have ongoing costs for the service plan.

There is a way around this however, and that’s LTE technology.  Smart watches that include an LTE radio can connect on their own to cellular networks.  They must connect to the same carrier as your phone, but will work even if your phone is far away, provided you have a sufficient cellular network signal.

Other Features

There are loads of other features that you can get in a good smart watch.  Such as those ever popular social media apps like Facebook and Twitter, through to apps that measure your heart rate, track your location, monitor your sleep, calculate your calories, monitor certain health conditions, and so on and so on.

Most smart watch operating systems will allow you to use all of these plus a whole lot more.

Look and Display

These days your smart watch doesn’t have to look clunky and be on a cheap looking plastic strap.  What look you go for in your watch ultimately comes down to personal taste. You might like a large square clock face, or a more rounded look.  You can have a metallic strap or a leather-like one and more.

When it comes to display size however, it’s a case of the bigger the better.  If you only read half of a text message that comes though, you may not see it’s full context.  The display doesn’t need to be large enough to bring up a keypad for your texts however, since you can send a text message via a voice activated app.

A 1.2 inch or 1.3 inch display would be a good, readable size, and anything beyond that is a bonus.  You’ll also need a good display resolution, to read any messages clearly.

Battery Life

You won’t want your smartphone to die on you while on an outing or when you have important matters to deal with.  To that end you need a watch with a good battery life. Most smart watches will give you a day or two of continuous operation on a single charge, but you can get ones with a longer battery life still, lasting up to 4 or 5 days.

This is particularly helpful if you wanted to use the watch to track the quality of your sleep, since you won’t be able to charge it up while you're sleeping.

Value  for money

Smart watches vary considerably in price.  You can get some for under $50 that will send and receive texts, which is great if that’s all you're looking for, but for bigger brands, you can sometimes pay over $400.
